A Must to do - Pungume Island

Pungume Island is a tiny, uninhabited limestone island located within the protected Menai Bay Marine Conservation Area off the south-western coast of Zanzibar. Often referred to as a hidden gem, the island boasts powdery white sandbanks, crystal-clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs and lush mangrove coastlines.

The island is primarily known as a serene day-trip destination, typically accessed via traditional wooden dhows or boats departing from the nearby fishing village of Kizimkazi or Kikungwi. Highlights of the excursion include snorkeling. The warm, clear waters and untouched coral gardens surrounding Pungume are teeming with colorful tropical fish, starfish and sea turtles.

Sandbank picnics: Excursions usually include a stop at a private sandbank, which is only accessible at low tide. Here, guides prepare a fresh seafood barbecue with grilled lobster, prawns, octopus and fish.

- Mangrove exploration: Many tours wind through the island's mangrove channels, where you may catch a glimpse of wild monkeys swinging through the branches.
