Nakupenda Biss Sandbank

Nakupenda Biss Sandbank

Nakupenda Island, whose Swahili name means "I love you", is a stunning uninhabited sandbank just a 20- to 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town in Zanzibar. It is famous for its powdery white sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters, which regularly emerge and disappear with the changing tides.
More Details

The tides: As it is a true sandbank, its size changes with the tide. It fully emerges in the morning and early afternoon, eventually slipping beneath the ocean surface as the tide comes in.

Activities: It is a great place to sunbathe, swim and snorkel among the surrounding fringing coral reefs.

The catch: As there are no permanent buildings on the sandbank, local tour operators set up pop-up shaded tents and prepare huge barbecues of freshly caught seafood (including lobster, prawns, octopus and calamari) right on the beach.
